Mabel Clarkson 1875-1950 First woman councillor first of many Still too few

Mabel Clarkson was politically active in Norwich from 1905 – when she joined the Norwich Board of Poor Law Guardians – until 1948 when she retired from the Aldermanic Bench. Throughout her career, she took particular interest in social problems faced by unemployed women, disadvantaged children, and those living in Norwich’s slums. Clarkson was the first female sheriff of Norwich, the second female Lord Mayor, and can boast many other pioneering positions as a female politician.
